Opening ceremony of the biggest sports event, London Olympics 2012 is just around the corner and it is facing problem with the timings. The length of the opening ceremony has been shortened by half an hour. The reason behind this cut back of the ceremony is public-transport fears. Danny Boyle, Artistic Director of the Ceremony has admitted to cut the length of his $42-million opening ceremony. The decision to shorten the ceremony was made after watching the rehearsals at Olympic Park on Saturday night. It is thought that the ceremony will take more than three hours.
Stunt bike sequence of 3 to 4 minutes has been removed from the ceremony in order to finish it within 3 hours and the spectators can reach home by public transportation after the ceremony. The riders will get the payment even though they are not performing in the event. Other changes will be also made in the ceremony to complete the show between 12 a.m. and 12:30 a.m. During the London Olympics games, all the Underground and buses will run 1 hour extra than usual which means until 2:30 a.m. According to reports in British newspapers, Danny Boyle was angry to cut down the show.
Danny Boyle told that the show has not been shortened due to the failure of private security firm G4S to offer the needed security staff for the Olympics. His ceremony is based on William Shakespeare's ''The Tempest'' and known as ''Isles of Wonder''. He also told that the opening sequence of the ceremony will include an idyllic British countryside setting with live farmyard animals (70 sheep, 3 cows, 9 geese, 10 chickens, 2 goats, 3 dogs and 12 horses). The closing act will be performed by the former Beatle Paul McCartney.
The march of athletes (from all 204 competing nations) in the 80,000-capacity stadium will be the longest part of the ceremony. The 2012 opening ceremony is going to take place on 27th July and around 10,000 people will perform in front of 60,000 spectators inside the Stadium. About 1 billion television audience will watch the ceremony.
